NACo County News

Averting the Ghost of Shutdowns Past, Congress passed and President Obama signed a $1.15 trillion FY16 spending bill that boosts overall federal spending by approximately 5 percent. To lend even more holiday cheer, counties fared very well in the FY16 appropriations process. Major highlights include:

Reverend Bobby Bolton, (left), pastor of Sweet Hope Baptist Church in Laurel, delivered an opening prayer to the senate on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at the invitation of Senator Billy Hudson, who led the Pledge of Allegiance, after Lt. Governor Tate Reeves called lawmakers to order.

Bobby Bolton is also President of the Perry County Board of Supervisors.

On December 3, 2015, Congress passed a five-year reauthorization of the federal surface transportation programs called the “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act” or FAST Act. The legislation included significant policy and funding provisions for counties and marks the first long-term transportation bill in over a decade.

Within this report,  PEER collected route information from the eleven Mississippi public school districts that have more than ten deficient bridges within their district boundaries to determine to what extent deficient bridges (i. e., bridges that are closed to all vehicles or posted for vehicle weight limits that would apply to school buses) affect each district’s respective transportation system.
