Mississippi Legislature Suspends 2020 Session Untill April 1

The Mississippi Legislature has officially suspended the 2020 Regular Legislative Session and adjourned until Wednesday April 1. This suspension comes as a recommendation from the State’s Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs as an extreme cautionary measure to reduce exposure to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Prior to the official adjournment, a number of procedural measures were executed to jointly agree on the suspension and to provide additional authority to local government regarding their employees. Please see the following to review the final actions taken by the legislature:

Passage of Joint Resolution SC 561: This resolution suspends the rules to allow for an introduction of a bill to authorize leave with pay for local government employees during an emergency.

Passage of House Bill 1647: House Bill 1647 is the “actual” legislation that gives local governments and school districts the authorization to give their employees leave with pay during certain emergencies and emergency disasters.

Passage of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 65: This resolution allows the Legislature to extend the session and allow for reconvening upon joint determination.

NOTE: The Mississippi Association of Supervisors continue to query State authorities for information as it pertains to how Mississippi may operate during this emergency event. Please stand by for more information as our office receives information.
