UPCOMING DEADLINES FOR

MDEQ’S SOLID WASTE ASSISTANCE GRANTS

MDEQ is encouraging county governments in the state to consider applying for the agency’s annual solid waste assistance grants (SWAG).  Applications for MDEQ’s competitive and non-competitive solid waste assistance grants for this state fiscal year must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on or before the dates below:

  • Wednesday, April 1st (for competitive SWAG grants) and
  • Thursday, April 30th (for non-competitive grants to county governments).

The competitive SWAG grant funds are available to municipalities, counties, regional solid waste management authorities and other multi-county entities. The non-competitive grants are allocated funds available only to county governments based on the State aid road mileage formula. Letters have previously been sent to each county indicating the amount of the County’s allocation for this state fiscal year. For county governments that wish to apply for both competitive and non-competitive grants, MDEQ encourages the county to consider combining those grant requests into one grant application to be submitted to MDEQ by the April 1st deadline.  Grant applications received by MDEQ after the deadlines above will not be eligible for consideration.

MDEQ Solid waste grants may be used by county governments for solid waste projects and programs including:

  • Clean-up of unauthorized dumps;
  • Establishment of collection programs for white goods (refrigerators, washers, dryers, hot water heaters) or other bulky wastes (such as electronics; furniture, etc).
  • Support for recycling and waste reduction programs;
  • Public education campaigns on local solid waste and recycling programs;
  • Salary support for local solid waste enforcement officers;
  • Household hazardous waste collection programs; and
  • Other local activities that support proper management and recycling of solid wastes for the public.

MDEQ also encourages county governments to apply for the agency’s local waste tire assistance grants.  These grants are available to assist counties in meeting the obligations of state law to provide a local waste tire collection program. MDEQ requests that county governments submit grant applications by April 30th for the waste tire assistance grants.
